Abstract

Due to the critical importance of reducing environmental problems and creating added value from gas resources, refinery and petrochemical processing units have considered implementing flare gas recovery systems. In this study, the flare gas recovery unit of the Tabriz Oil Refining Company was simulated using Aspen HYSYS software and compared with a proposed model. The simulation was based on three processes: compression, separation of liquid and vapor phases, and sweetening of recovery gases. The compression process was carried out at a constant temperature as much as possible, utilizing both liquid ring and centrifuge compressors. Safety and economy were prioritized in the selection of primary and secondary equipment for the simulation. The results showed that the liquid ring compressor was safer than the centrifuge compressor in the compression process, despite the centrifugal compressor showing better performance in the separation process of liquid and steam phases. Both models performed equally well in the sweetening process of the flare gas recovery unit. This research aims to demonstrate the potential of using and comparing centrifuge compressors in cases where liquid ring compressors are inaccessible for these units.
