Abstract
One of the important challenges that has attracted the attention of the scientific community today is the pollution of water resources caused by toxic and dangerous organic and mineral pollutants. The most common causes of water pollution are human activities, such as the effects of the food chain, water pollution caused by agricultural activities, dumping industrial waste into water, and leaking sewage pipes. Since these pollutants are not biodegradable, the only way to purify water from these pollutants is to remove them from that environment by bio-based adsorbents. Nowadays, the production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from different sources of cellulose has been considered as a promising nanomaterial for a wide range of applications including water treatment. The properties and efficiency of CNCs depend on the cellulose source extracted from it. For this purpose, in this study, the types of cellulose sources are introduced and the method of extracting CNCs is investigated by acid hydrolysis method, which is an easy and efficient method from the point of view of the academic and industrial community, and the applicability of CNCs in the treatment of water pollutants.
