An investigation of corrosion in air coolers of oil industries and practical solutions to solve the problem and increase their efficiency

Abstract
Given the widespread use of air-cooled heat exchangers in the oil and gas industries, it is important to prevent any defects in this type of exchanger. Today, in order to increase the efficiency of air coolers, common methods such as bypassing part of the cold air flow, placing an air valve in the path of the air flow and limiting its flow rate, controlling engine speed, and using variable pitch fans are proposed. In the industry, air condensers are constantly subject to corrosion and fluid leakage, causing production to stop and the need to repair and replace pipes, as well as environmental pollution. This study describes the phenomenon of corrosion and deposition in fans, then explains the types of corrosion, the influential factors, and suggests solutions to reduce corrosion and deposition in air fans. Optimal adjustment of process temperature and increasing the efficiency of air coolers, the effect of various design parameters on the power consumption of fans, the most effective solution to increase the efficiency of air coolers, how to diagnose the corrosion problem of air fans, and determining the optimal performance point of air coolers from both economic and operational perspectives are also examined. By conducting sediment analysis tests during major repairs, the factors affecting the formation of sediment in fans of a petrochemical complex, as well as the relationship between corrosion and sedimentation in them, are studied and examined, and finally, the necessary solutions are presented.
