Abstract

In this research, carbon nanostructures including Graphene oxide (Go) and Multi-Walled Carbon NanoTubes (MWCNTs) and silica nanostructures including silica aerogel and spherical nano silica were prepared for improvement of the tribological properties of drilling fluids. For this purpose, Go, MWCNTs, spherical nano silica, and silica aerogel were synthesized with modified Hummer's method, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and a sol-gel method respectively. MWCNTs were functionalized with Nitric acid. The as-prepared nanostructures were characterized with X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The as-prepared nanomaterials were added to the lubricating oil with using the appropriate surfactant. The nano lubricant additives were added to the drilling fluid. Tan the effect of these nanostructures addition on friction and film strength of drilling fluids was investigated with the EP/Lubricity Tester machine. Results showed that morphology has high influence in tribology properties. Results showed that graphene oxide is preferred to the others for improving the drilling fluids tribological properties.
